How life path numbers are computed
Numerology’s arithmetic is older than its marketing: the Pythagorean reduction is a fixed procedure with one right answer per date. Five facts define every number on this page:

Repeated digit sums
The core operation is the digit sum, applied until one digit remains: 1991 → 1+9+9+1 = 20 → 2+0 = 2. Every reduction this instrument performs is printed on the result plate, so you can check the arithmetic by hand.

Month, day, and year reduced separately
The three-part method reduces each component of the date on its own before the final addition. This is the detail that separates methods: a flat sum of all digits can silently destroy a master number hiding in the day or year — born on the 22nd, the three-part method keeps your 22.

Master numbers survive every stage
11, 22, and 33 are never reduced — not inside a component, not at the final step. A year like 1984 (1+9+8+4 = 22) enters the final addition as 22, and a final total of 33 stays 33.

The optional name reading maps letters to digits — A=1 … I=9, J=1 … R=9, S=1 … Z=8 — then splits them: all letters make the expression number, vowels the soul urge, consonants the personality. Y is a vowel when it is not adjacent to a plain vowel.

What is a life path number?
A life path number is the single digit — or master number 11, 22, or 33 — that a birth date reduces to under the Pythagorean tradition's digit-sum arithmetic. The tradition reads each of the 12 possible results as a temperament: 1 the Initiator, 7 the Analyst, and so on. It is the numerology equivalent of a sun sign — the headline number the rest of a chart is read against.
How is the life path number calculated?
This calculator uses the three-part method: reduce the month, the day, and the year separately by repeated digit sums, then add the three reduced parts and reduce the total. Example — July 22, 1991: month 7; day 22 (a master number, kept); year 1+9+9+1 = 20 → 2. Then 7 + 22 + 2 = 31 → 3+1 = 4. We use this method rather than a flat sum of all digits because it preserves master numbers that appear inside a component, such as a 22nd-of-the-month birthday.
What are master numbers 11, 22, and 33?
In the Pythagorean tradition, 11, 22, and 33 are never reduced further — they are read as the base digit under load: 11 as an intensified 2, 22 as a 4 built to public scale, 33 as a 6 turned outward into teaching. This calculator preserves them at every stage of the reduction, so a birth day of 22 or a year whose digits sum to 22 carries through unreduced.
What are expression, soul urge, and personality numbers?
They come from the full birth name, using the Pythagorean letter table (A=1 through I=9, repeating J=1 through R=9, then S=1 through Z=8). All letters summed and reduced give the expression (or destiny) number; the vowels alone give the soul urge; the consonants alone give the personality number. Y counts as a vowel when it is not next to a plain vowel — so Lynn's Y is a vowel, Yolanda's is a consonant.
Is numerology scientific?
No. The arithmetic is exact and repeatable — every reduction on this page can be checked by hand — but the meanings attached to the numbers are tradition, not measurement. There is no experimental evidence that a birth date's digit sum predicts personality. We publish the traditional readings as a lens for reflection and label them as such; that honesty is house policy.
